The Man’s Guide to Grocery Shopping

The Man’s Guide to Grocery ShoppingMen that are married or living with their girlfriends have the luxury of leaving the grocery shopping to the women. At most they’ll add a few of the things they want to the list and then sit back and go about the rest of their day. However, if you happen to be a man that is living on his own or with roommates, chances are you’ve got to take on the task of filling the refrigerator and the cupboards. If you want to learn how to go grocery shopping the right way there are some easy tips you can follow to make things easier on yourself in the long run.

Most men are perfectly fine with tossing potato chips, frozen TV dinners, sodas and beer into their shopping carts. However, these food items are nowhere near the right kinds that are beneficial for your health. You don’t have to be a grocery shopping pro to figure out which items you should always reach out for. With time and practice you’ll be able to stock your refrigerator with the appropriate items that will not only satiate your hunger pangs but are good for your body as well.

First things first: don’t just rely on complete meals in a box. While frozen TV dinners are ideal when you’ve got little time on your hands, these should not be the only types of meals you consume on a daily basis. Instead pick up a couple packs of lean ground beef, some cold cuts (chicken, turkey, salami, etc.) and learn how to make your own meals. Whether you enjoy grilling or BBQing, having these kinds of fresh meat products will allow you to make all kinds of dishes. For those days when you need something easy to put together but with a hearty kick, pick up a couple cans of instant soup. There are a variety of flavors that will suit your taste buds, including beef and vegetables, clam chowder and minestrone. If you want a meal that comes in a box that isn’t a TV dinner, you can always opt for frozen pizza. Many come in healthy versions that are also delicious as well as nutritious.

Even if you are not very savvy when it comes to cooking there are certain ingredients that can be used to make meals for all skill sets. Make sure you have the following items in your grocery cart: cheese (sliced and/or shredded), onions, tomatoes, mayonnaise, milk (skim or non-fat), eggs, fresh veggies of your choice, sugar, salt, butter and fruit. From breakfast to lunch and dinner, just a handful of these ingredients can keep your hunger pangs at bay.

Don’t forget the importance of breakfast foods, either. In addition to the traditional eggs and bacon, be sure to add whole wheat bread, whole grain cereal and crackers to your list as well. These food items will get your mornings off to a great start. When it comes to beverages make sure you’ve got a steady supply of water in addition to tea and coffee. Stay away from energy drinks and while it is perfectly fine to include your favorite alcoholic beverages, keep your consumption to a minimum. Instead of getting full on beer, get your butt up and make a meal!
