Lunch is perhaps one of the most important meals that a child has on a daily basis. Because of the rising health concerns and risks for school-age children, the contents of their lunch should be more than peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Of course when most people think of a healthy or nutritious meal, they often believe this means sacrificing taste. However, that could not be farther from the truth. These days it is entirely possible for parents to put together a lunch that is not only nutritious but delicious as well.
It is important to choose meals that contain ingredients that your child already likes so keep that in mind when preparing their lunch. There are so many lunch ideas for parents to use for reference online that even those with the pickiest of eaters can find a good group of recipes to use at home. Does your child love fruit? Why not make a sandwich out of it? All you need is a few slices of fresh strawberries, 1 tablespoon of low-fat cream cheese, two slices of whole-wheat bread, 1/4 teaspoon of honey and 1/8 teaspoon of grated orange zest. When you put these ingredients together you get a homemade strawberry and cream cheese sandwich. Mix together the orange zest, cream cheese and honey in a bowl and spread over the whole-wheat bread. Next, place the strawberry slices accordingly and press the bread slices together to make the perfect lunchtime sandwich.
Want to treat your child to a hearty salad for lunch? Then gather together the following ingredients: 1 cup of shredded carrots, 1 1/2 cups of chopped bell peppers, 1/2 cup of diced radishes, 1 1/2 cups of chopped broccoli florets, 1 tablespoon of minced red onions and 1/2 cup of ranch dressing (or other favorite dressing that your child likes). In a medium bowl, toss together all of the ingredients, including the dressing until everything has been coated. Place in the refrigerator until ready to serve.
Need a healthy beverage to go with your child’s lunch? A homemade smoothie will be enough to do the trick. Simply toss in 1/4 cup of silken tofu, half of a banana, 1 cup of frozen mixed berries and 1/2 cup of apple juice into a blender and blend until smooth. Pour into a thermos or other beverage container and your child will be all set.
