Collagen Supplements – How they can Help your Health

Collagen Supplements – How they can Help your HealthCollagen is the most abundant protein in the body and accounts for approximately 75-85% of skin, muscle and connective tissue. It gives skin its elasticity and firmness, makes hair, teeth and nails strong and is found in muscles, joints, ligaments and cartilage. However, after age 25 we lose 1.5% of collagen per year and production ceases around age 40-45. Loss of collagen is a familiar concern to those who wish to treat skincare concerns such as fine lines, wrinkles and loss of elasticity and firmness. However, collagen loss also affects the muscular-skeletal system and conditions such as arthritis, osteo arthritis and loss of muscle tone can occur. Skincare products such as facial serums and some moisturizers contain collagen extracts to help with the topical concerns, but a current popular topic is taking collagen supplements. Collagen supplements will help to restore lost collagen and reduce or reverse more internal conditions. Those who could benefit from collagen supplements include:

·    People with arthritis or who have a family history of arthritis, obesity or muscular skeletal or joint diseases.

·    Men and women over the age of 40. However, starting after age 25 is ideal as a preventative measure.

·    People who work outdoors (to help minimize the formation of fine lines and wrinkles from sun exposure and squinting).

·    Athletes and physically active people who perform weight-bearing exercises, such as jogging, weight lifting, mountain climbing, etc.

·    Smokers.

·    Those who experience nutritional imbalances or follow extreme diets, such as no meat or protein (to avoid protein deficiency).

Taking a collagen supplement will also help maintain fuller and smoother lips, increase wound healing and benefit bone structure support.

A recommended dosage is 7- 10 grams per day either as a tablet or powder form for approximately 60-90 days. Collagen supplements should be taken once per day and at night, since the skin cells and body are in repair mode. Once taken, they can be absorbed in the bloodstream in approximately 5-10 minutes. After the first 60-90 day period, a supplement can be continued every other day (approximately 2-3 times per week). As of date, the FDA has ruled out any side effects or toxicity, as well as negative interactions with food or medications. However, they may need be taken on a case-by-case basis, especially for those who experience allergic reactions to products. Also, those who are unsure should consult with a physician.
