Drinks to Reach for This Holiday Season

Drinks to Reach for This Holiday SeasonAlthough Christmas and New Year’s are the two major holidays that make up the winter season, many will undoubtedly celebrate more often than on those two occasions this year - from cocktail parties, family get-togethers, nights out on the town, drinks with friends, you name it and chances are it’s a party somebody will be throwing. And what good is a celebration with friends and loved ones without drinks? While we all should drink responsibly, you’ll be happy to know that there are a handful of special drinks that are filled with flavor and - even better - are less than 200 calories.

Before delving into the details, it is important to note that even though these specific alcoholic beverages are less than 200 calories, the key to making these drinks work for you and not against you is to choose a serving size that is not too big. Additionally, avoid having too many drinks. Tossing back one beverage after another only ends up piling on the calories so stick to one or two, or else you’ll defeat the purpose of staying low on calories (not to mention you’ll want to get home from your shindig in one piece!).

If you’re a fan of mudslides, now’s the time to order one up! This sweet alcoholic beverage is about 180 calories. The main ingredients in a traditional mudslide include vodka, Irish cream, and coffee liqueur so if you love coffee flavored drinks with a kick, this is one beverage you’ll want to warm up to (for you chocolate lovers out there, add some gooey chocolate syrup around the inside of your glass).

Fans of the sour apple martini will be thrilled to know that this face-puckering drink is 160 calories, depending on how it is made. There are versions of the sour apple martini that can be calorie inflated so don’t be fooled. The best way to get a calorie-friendly martini is to have one made with ¾ ounces of sour apple liqueur, ¾ ounces vodka, and 2 ½ ounces sour mix. With this recipe in play, get ready to shock your taste buds with a fruity zing of flavor.

Need an alcoholic beverage that isn’t considered “a drink a chick would order”? Then the gin and tonic will be the perfect order for the calorie-conscious fella in your life or for a female whose palette requires a bit more oomph! When made with 3 ounces of tonic and one once of gin, this beverage contains a little more than 100 calories. Not bad for a good ole fashioned gin and tonic.

Not big on fancy drinks? Then you can keep it simple and low in calories by ordering a clear diet soda with vodka. Regardless of what type of diet soda you have mixed with your vodka (clear soda is preferred over dark colored soda), it will more than likely be less than 100 calories. This makes it a great drink to sip on throughout your event without feeling guilty about the calories you’ll be consuming.

When in doubt, you can always fall back on the king of all celebration drinks: champagne. At just 85 calories, you can toast to your heart’s content. With fewer calories than beer and wine, you’ll feel right at home celebrating good times with good people with a good drink in hand!
