If You’re Lactose Intolerant
Being lactose intolerant is a condition that doesn’t allow a person to eat or drink anything containing dairy. Lactose is a type of sugar that is naturally found in milk and other dairy products. The human body takes the lactose we drink or eat and using enzymes to break the lactose down in order to use it for energy. For those who are lactose intolerant, their bodies don’t have enough of the enzymes needed to make the process work. This results in difficulty digesting dairy products. The most common symptoms that occur when a lactose intolerant person eats or drinks dairy includes feeling bloated, crampy, and gassy. Many people can get physically sick or nauseas after eating dairy.
The unfortunate thing about being lactose intolerant is that it can pose as a health problem because the human body needs dairy and calcium in order to stay healthy and strong. Luckily, there are a number of products available in grocery stores that are labeled “lactose free” so that it can be safely digested. However, this still doesn’t allow for the proper calcium levels to be present in the body. So what’s a lactose intolerant person to do?
Adding a daily calcium supplement to your daily diet will help immensely by providing your body with the right amount of vitamin C and D, as well as other ingredients a lactose intolerant person may be lacking. Doctors suggest taking a calcium supplement as well as vitamin D in pill form. Because skipping out on milk can be devastating for your bones in the long run, turn to milk that is specifically formulated for people with lactose intolerance. Soy milk is also another safe alternative for lactose intolerance. Soy milk contains about the same levels of calcium and vitamin D that regular milk has but without the problem of digesting. You can also try yogurt since it contains the enzymes needed to digest and breakdown the lactose for you. Other foods to include in your daily diet to avoid calcium deficiencies include: almonds, broccoli and sardines.
If you just can’t bear the thought of a life without ice cream, regular milk and your other favorite dairy-filled foods, there is another alternative. Your doctor may suggest an over-the-counter product that is taken before eating a meal that contains dairy. This type of medication is responsible for helping the body digest any dairy consumed, while at the same time preventing any of the uncomfortable symptoms that usually follow. This way you can eat what you want without having to suffer for it afterwards.
