How to Give Your Brain a Boost!

How to Give Your Brain a Boost! It’s not only our bodies that must be maintained over the years. Being able to continually keep our brains healthy and active is one of the best ways to leading a longer and healthier life and prevent one of the most debilitating diseases that attacks the brain: Alzheimer’s disease. If you don’t want to spend money on those fancy video games that stimulate your mental capacity, then turn to the following foods for a natural brain boost!

Berries and Broccoli

These two foods have been shown to possess natural plant hormones that may be able to prevent Alzheimer’s disease. A recent medical study showed that those who included more of these healthy foods in their daily diet, scored higher on memory tests than those who consumed little to no berries and broccoli. The more berries and broccoli you include in your daily meals and diet over the years, the better off your brain function and memory will be.

Alcohol

It’s already a pretty well-known medical fact that consuming moderate amounts of wine - especially red wine - is beneficial to our overall health, such as our heart but these benefits have also come to include our mental performance. Doctors suggest two glasses of wine for men and one glass for women once to twice a week. Remember, moderation is the key here.

Antioxidants

Providing your body with plenty of antioxidants does more than just keep your complexion fresh and youthful, it also keeps your brain intact. Free radicals not only damage your skin cells, but your brain cells as well. When free radicals are allowed to roam free, you are putting your brain at risk. Free radicals are experts at attacking and damaging the body’s cell, prematurely aging brain and skin cells and even damaging the brain’s neurons, which are the cells responsible for carrying messages to and from the brain. One of the most important antioxidants to load up on to protect your brain function is vitamin E, whether it’s in food or pill/supplement form. So in your next meal you should include the following foods: sunflower seeds, almonds, sun-dried tomatoes, pine nuts, and wheat germ.

Fish

Medical researchers are singing the praises of the omega-3 fatty acids that are found in fish. Some studies have shown that including fish in a daily diet can help prevent depression, which literally saves your brain. Major depression is a condition that is hard on the brain because it produces large amounts of a steroid called glucocortoids into the blood. When this happens, the memory center of the brain actually begins to shrink, which can lead to more serious health issues. If you have suffered from depression or have a family history of it, protect your brain in the long run and throw some fish into your daily diet two to three times a week. Also switch to canola oil or olive oil when it comes to cooking and preparing your meals. This all helps to boost both your heart and your brain function.
