Going Vegan

Going VeganSometimes change is good. When it comes to your diet, what you eat can make or break your health and lifestyle. Unfortunately, some people choose such diets without knowing what they’re getting themselves into. If you’re thinking about becoming a vegan, read on to find out if this lifestyle will really suit your needs.

Being a vegan is considered by many as being a “strict or pure vegetarian.” While most vegetarians consume animal-based products such as honey, milk, and eggs, vegans are very strict about not consuming any food or animal-based products of any kind. True vegans take their respect for animal life to a whole different level by practicing the belief that animals should not be used for food, clothing, or any other purpose.

Vegans choose this lifestyle for many reasons, some of the most common being a great concern for the treatment of animals, the environment, better health, as well as spiritual reasons. Many vegans work as animal rights advocates, who want to make a difference in the practice of factory farming and animal testing. Vegans see such practices as cruelty to animals, and hope their lifestyle and philosophy will encourage others to turn to veganism in an attempt to preserve the life of all animals.

If you’re thinking about becoming a vegan, there are a lot of changes you need to be willing to make in your life. First thing’s first: throw out just about everything in your refrigerator and pantry that contains any animal-based products. Remember, this also includes eggs, milk and honey, as well as the obvious deli meat, chicken and fish. There are plenty of online resources that are dedicated to helping people make the transition to veganism and provide a list of the appropriate foods to eat to maintain this lifestyle. As a new vegan, you’ll become accustomed to meals that include dark, leafy vegetables, whole grains, fruit and beans. There are also vegan cookbooks that show you how to create meals that follow the vegan diet. Replacing your traditional foods is as easy as substituting them with plant-based ingredients. If you’re missing your helping of meat, chicken and fish in your diet, there are whole lines of “mock meat” made from non-animal bases. So you can have your helping of vegan sausage, hamburgers, and chicken nuggets.

While it may sound like a tough commitment with a lot missing, veganism has been shown to be very beneficial to those who practice it and stick to it for a long period of time. Medical studies have shown a vegan diet can lower the risk of serious health conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, stroke, colon cancer, heart attack, and prostate cancer. Even children who turn vegan can gain a huge health advantage.

However, veganism can be dangerous if not managed properly. There have been cases of misinformed vegans who subjected their children to malnutrition or were victims of health deficiencies themselves. Doctors always stress that vegans should take dietary supplements to replace the lack of necessary protein and other vitamins and minerals that aren’t included in veganism. This is where being knowledgeable about the vegan lifestyle is very important. Poorly managed vegan diets can lead to low levels of calcium, iodine, and vitamins B and D. Before making the switch to a vegan lifestyle, make sure you know what the requirements are and follow them at all times. Also talk to your doctor to make sure you are providing your body with everything it needs while still living up to the vegan diet.
