Just as you change certain lifestyle habits based on season, you should also shift your eating habits as well in order to maintain the best overall health. While summertime is all about enjoying cold beverages to stave off the heat, winter should be about warming up your insides, calming your nerves, and alleviating any stress. So toss out your sodas, energy drinks, and coffee and replace them with soothing teas. The health benefits various teas carry is well known and just one or two cups a day can provide your body with enough antioxidants and other nutrients to keep your system in tip-top shape for the entire season. Tea helps calm your mind and keeps you energized without the crash that caffeine-filled beverages tend to supply.
If you are a snacker or eat when bored or emotional, you’ll want to make sure the foods you’re consuming are going to be good for your body. That being said, replace sweets, sugary foods, and other unhealthy items with veggies like carrot sticks, celery, and other similar foods. Dipping them in ranch, peanut butter or cream cheese makes for a tasty midnight snack. When it comes to dessert you don’t have to give it up completely - just make sure you choose healthy options, such as berries, fruits, and angel food cake, which is light on calories.
To make grocery shopping and meal preparation easier, include more frozen foods. Many frozen food items are very healthy and provide a fresh taste when cooked. You can turn to frozen fish and vegetables for a meal that is easy to store at home and is much easier to prepare and cook. Take this time to learn new recipes and find out about new ingredients and foods you may not have thought about trying before.
It is also important to learn how to switch fatty versions of food items and commodities with healthier ones. For example, use skim milk instead of regular milk and low fat cheese instead of regular cheese. You can also reduce the amount of salt and butter you use in your recipes. All these little changes add up to big results in your health.
