Make Your Next Halloween a Healthy One

Make Your Next Halloween a Healthy OneHalloween is one of the holidays that kids from all over wait for. Parents love to see their kids dress up and go trick-or-treating but worry at the same time about sore tummies and even worse: cavities. Luckily, there are new alternatives to those tempting little sugar-filled packages that are tasty but healthy at the same time.

In the past, the only non-candy treats given to children while trick-or-treating was dental floss or toothbrushes - obviously given when visiting a dentist’s office or a health-conscious neighbor. However, there is a way to provide your kids and their friends with treats that they won’t be sour over. While shopping for goodies to give out to the neighborhood, be sure to check out the following items (keep in mind that the best treats to offer to trick-or-treaters are those contained in individually wrapped packages. This is mainly for safety reasons):

Trail mix packages: these packages are filled with a combination of delicious snack foods, including bits of chocolate, grains, dried fruit and nuts. They are great for eating in between meals and don’t pose a risk for cavities the way traditional Halloween candy does.

Cheese cracker sandwiches: these little snack crackers may not be candy but they have a great taste that work for your kids’ snack cravings. Just a small handful is enough for them to get their fill without ruining their appetite. You can buy cheese cracker sandwiches in any grocery store. Make sure to buy the snack sized, individually wrapped packages.

Yogurt covered raisins: yes, it is fruit but when covered with yogurt, your kids will have a Halloween treat that can’t be matched by any candy. The yogurt coating provides your kids with plenty of health benefits, such as plenty of vitamin C and D. Yogurt can also aid with soothing constipation and diarrhea, which may come in handy if your kids plan on consuming more than their fair share of goodies after trick-or-treating is over. Raisins are healthy as well and in addition to adding more calcium, it also has the ability to protect the teeth against cavities, tooth decay or brittleness. If yogurt doesn’t quite cut it with your kids and the neighborhood trick-or-treaters, then you can always opt for chocolate covered raisins.

Stickers or crayons: chances are you’ll get trick-or-treaters of all ages. Stickers, crayons and even mini coloring books will be a delight for younger children. Instead of getting cavities or a stomach ache by gorging on candy, you’ll provide them with a fun activity they can use anytime.

Dark chocolate: this is one of the healthiest forms of chocolate around. Dark chocolate is full of healthy antioxidants, making it great for you to snack on as well as your kids. There are some types of dark chocolate that are better than others, however. The ideal dark chocolate to purchase for trick-or-treating are those that do not contain syrup, sugar, milk, oil or wax. Pure, natural dark chocolate is the best way to go. Before buying, read the label. If it lists long, scientific sounding ingredients, chances are it’s been altered in some way.
