If you’ve never thought about using a smoothie as a form of medicine, this innovative take on health and healing may be one you should look into further. You don’t need to buy the most expensive smoothie machine or spend your dollars at the nearest smoothie and juice joint. All you need are a few key ingredients that include loads of flavorful fruits and healthy veggies to create a custom beverage that can heal your woes and keep you feeling fit.
How is this possible? It’s actually quite simple. Fruits and vegetables contain a bunch of ingredients that help promote health benefits when consumed. The main components fruits and vegetables provide the body with include antioxidants, which help fight against free radicals and prevent cell damage, phytonutrients, which show promise in protecting the body against certain types of cancer, and fiber, which reduces the risk of breast and colon cancer.
Are you a smoker? Needless to say, smoking is going to introduce your body to a host of health problems. If you are in the process of quitting, add a specially blended smoothie to help kick your habit. Medical studies have found that dietary supplementation with a blend of orange and carrot juice lowers oxidation in cigarette smokers. Combine ½ cup of freshly squeezed orange juice, ½ cup carrot juice, 1 ½ cups diced pineapple, 1 ½ cups diced cantaloupe a pinch of nutmeg and 3 ice cubes in a blender until smooth.
For those recovering from breast cancer or who are prone to it, drinking a smoothie with berries and fiber provides an excellent source of isoflavones, which have been found to decrease the risk of breast cancer. Blend one cup of blackberries, one cup of strawberries, one-cup blueberries, one-cup low-fat vanilla soymilk, 1/8-teaspoon ground cinnamon and 3 ice cubes for a refreshing smoothie that will boost your energy.
We all know about the wonderful health benefits of green tea, so it’s no surprise that there are tons of smoothie recipes that include this powerful ingredient. Using either powdered green tea or brewing it using tea bags, you can put together a power-packed smoothie that can help alleviate headaches and indigestion. Try brewing one bag of green tea and chill it in the refrigerator. Once it is cooled, take the green tea and blend it with 3 ice cubes, ½ a banana and one large peach that has been sliced and pitted until smooth. Slowly add in one tablespoon of honey for sweetness.
