The Role of Vitamin E in Skincare

The Role of Vitamin E in SkincareVitamin E is one of those ingredients that pack so much power, it can be found in just about any beauty and skincare product… and with good reason. This antioxidant, fat-soluble vitamin can treat everything from anti-aging woes to scars and other skin conditions. Luckily, this wonder ingredient isn’t hard to come by and can be used on a daily basis for better skin and better health.

Vitamin E can be found in everything from nuts, seeds, vegetable oils, leafy green veggies, fruits and whole grains. Vitamin E is a blend of natural compounds (alpha, beta, delta and gamma), which make it a mixed tocopherol. This form of vitamin E is widely used in skincare products due to the fact that vitamin E is especially effective in fighting and preventing free radical damage. When free radicals are eliminated from the skin, the healthier and more youthful looking the skin is.

Internally, vitamin E plays just as big of a role if not bigger than when used on the outside. Within the body, the presence of vitamin E is vital in preventing oxidation of fellow vitamins A and C, as well as Essential Fatty Acids. In addition, vitamin E also works to prevent tissue deterioration and the loss of red blood cells.

As an antioxidant, vitamin E in skincare and anti-aging has proved to be the perfect match. For those who suffer from photoaging and other types of skin damage from excessive sun exposure, using vitamin E as a topical treatment has been clinically proven to dramatically reduce the appearance of deep wrinkles, smooth rough patches of skin and improve overall skin health.

Other main benefits to note when it comes to vitamin E and skincare is its ability to protect the epidermis from UV damage, strengthen the skin’s barrier function, prevents/reduces water loss in the skin, protects the skin’s lipid (oil) balance during cleansing, reduces the severity of sunburns and absorbs quickly into the skin.

When it comes to skin discoloration and scarring, many people turn to topical ointments and creams containing vitamin E as a method of reducing the appearance of scars and even stretch marks. Vitamin E supplements are very popular and also correct skin damage from the inside out. Of course, it is wise to know that vitamin E does not work wonders. Applying it daily may or may not make your scars or stretch marks fade - these results are usually dependent upon the individual’s skin and its ability to heal. Consult with your doctor or dermatologist about your skin and see what products he/she can prescribe for you that contain vitamin E.

Although vitamin E is available in different forms, one form isn’t exactly better than the other. That all depends on your body, however, natural forms of vitamin E in foods or natural-source supplements tend to work better within the body than synthetic forms.
