Say Cheers to Wine and Your Health

Say Cheers to Wine and Your HealthIn addition to healthy foods and supplements, you can now add a bottle of your favorite wine to your list of nutritional must have items. Whether you’re a wine connoisseur or trying it out for the first time, a little wine can’t hurt! Find out what a glass of wine can do for your health and why medical professionals are giving you the green light to drink and be merry!

For over a decade, medical experts have studied the effects of wine and have discovered some interesting results. As we all may know, wine is made from grapes. Grapes are a very healthy food and it should only be obvious that these same properties should carry over into wine form. According to scientists and researchers, the high levels of antioxidants present in the skin and seeds of red grapes is very beneficial in reducing the risk the coronary heart disease by reducing bad cholesterol (LDL), raising good cholesterol (HDL), and reducing the chance of blood clots.

While all types of wine can be good for your health, red wine in particular is special. In addition to what it can do for the heart, research has found that red wine contains the antioxidant resveratrol. Studies show this antioxidant may prevent the development of tumors in certain cancers. Another study found that the presence of resveratrol also helped in the formation of nerve cells. This would prove extremely helpful in treating neurological diseases, such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

To enrich your life, researchers say the best wines to choose from for a strong and healthy heart should contain the highest concentrations of antioxidants, also called flavonoids. The cream of the crop in this category includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Syrah, and Pinot Noir. White wines typically contain lower levels of flavonoids, as well as Merlots and Red Zinfandels. The sweeter the wine, the less flavonoids it contains. Your best bet by fair is to go with a good, dry red wine.

Of course just because the doctor says it’s okay to have a glass or two, that doesn’t mean you can go overboard. Too much of anything is never good. When it comes to wine, it’s all about moderation. It is recommended that men stick to two glasses (4-ounce glass) per day, while women should consume only one glass per day. If you are not a wine drinker, do not feel pressured to throw wine into your daily diet.

Despite all the information listed above, occasional and binge drinkers do not benefit from drinking wine more than a person who drinks moderately on a daily basis - in fact, the mortality rate for these individuals is higher. So do not believe that the more wine you consume, the healthier you’ll be.
