The Jujube

The JujubeAwww, doesn’t the word “jujube” sound so cute? Despite the cutesy name, the jujube has been a staple in China for more than 4,000 years. Seen as beneficial to the body when eaten, skin care specialists are seeing the jujube in a different light: as a source of natural skin rejuvenation. Find out the history of the jujube and what its abilities could mean for the beauty and skin care industry.

Since its origination in China thousands of years ago, the jujube has gained a reputation for being able to invigorate the body, strengthen the heart, increase metabolism, and slow down the aging process. Not bad for an Asian fruit commonly referred to as the “Chinese date,” based on its single seed and sweet granular texture. While many fruit-related ingredients used in skin care and beauty products can be hard to cultivate, collect or export due to high costs, the jujube is one of the easiest fruit crops to grow. Unlike other fruit crops, jujubes rarely suffer from pests or other problems when it comes to cultivation. There are over 400 cultivators in China alone. However, there are jujube crops currently growing in Texas as well. The jujube was introduced to Texas as a crop back in 1875.

In most cases, what is good for the inside of the body must also be good for the outside, right? No one can say for sure but it is this idea that skin care manufacturers, chemists, and other skin care professionals are hoping for. With its high levels of vitamin C and other natural nutrients, skin care manufacturers are starting to include the jujube as a main ingredient in a variety of skin care products. Natural cosmetics products have been the most involved in producing lines of jujube-based items. These products range from skin care and cosmetics to hair care products and even bath and shower items.

The impact of the jujube in this part of the beauty and cosmetics industry appears to have some success, as marketing research reports as many as 30 new cosmetic products containing jujube ingredients being launched for public distribution globally within the past few years.

The jujube has been noted as being rich in calcium, proteins, vitamins C, B1, B2, and A, and possessing the ability to deliver intense moisture, protection, and nourishment to the skin as well. So what does that mean for the tons of skin care products that contain this small and edible Asian fruit? Buying a cream, moisturizer or other type of item containing jujube as an ingredient means the promotion of cellular turnover (removing dead skin cells, which allows new ones to come through), improved elasticity and firmness, and even the ability to reduce the signs of stretch marks and scars.
