The Baby Food Diet
Look out Atkins, here comes Gerber… Talk about craving control – if you knew all you were going to be able to eat was baby food, it makes it difficult to ever imagine being hungry again. But many celebrities are replacing their 4-star restaurant meals with food from the baby aisle and giving this one a shot. Not that baby food itself is so bad, but without added starches and sodium, it amounts to very small portions of pureed blandness. Of course that is exactly what its adherents are going for – built-in portion control (the jars are only so big) and high nutritional value.
The Cookie Diet
This one sounds better already. Cookies are an idea that all of us can get behind. Of course the cookies aren’t exactly what you’re thinking. Instead, there are a few varieties of these put out by different manufacturers. They come in different flavors (don’t worry – chocolate chip is available) and their dense texture is more reminiscent of protein bars than cookies. The strategy with this one is to replace breakfast and lunch with cookies and eat a meal of lean protein and vegetables for dinner. The appeal of course is the cookies – most people report liking them. The downside is that once the weight is off, it’s difficult to return to normal eating – no sustainable new eating habits have formed without the cookies.
The Apple Cider Vinegar Diet
This one has made a resurgence in recent years. Popular in the 70s, the idea behind the diet is that dieters down a shot of apple cider vinegar before eating. The prevailing wisdom was that the vinegar would somehow cut through the fat in your body and help you lose the weight. This is, of course, ridiculous and completely false. The only discernable diet benefit to drinking the vinegar is that is can control your appetite by simply being distasteful. Some dieticians also believe that it could work as a regular reminder that you are trying to lose weight, but so far as a miracle diet, this one is out.
The Lunch Box Diet
This one actually may have some merit according to some experts. Here’s how it works: you eat a normal breakfast and dinner, but instead of lunch, you snack all afternoon on the contents of your lunch box (yes, as a built-in bonus, you get to scour eBay for the perfect one). Pack it with 60% vegetables, 30% protein and 10% fat (low-fat dressing or peanut butter are recommended). By limiting the amount of food you can eat over the afternoon to what fits in a standard-sized lunch box, you are sure not to overeat and by packing it as directed and eating as you get hungry, you keep your metabolism humming along during the time of day it normally spends in the doldrums.
