There are a number of people who make the attempt at switching to a vegetarian diet, only to fall back into old habits after a short amount of time. But no one says you have to go from a regular diet to vegetarian overnight. As long as you set realistic goals for yourself, you shouldn’t have any problems making the transition. Instead of putting unnecessary pressure on yourself to completely switch cold turkey, make it a gradual change where you slowly start to incorporate healthier, vegetarian foods while slowly removing the foods that will no longer fit under your new eating regimen. One way to start your transition is to make a list of the foods you currently eat, including snacks and your favorite meals. Then see which food items you can substitute with vegetarian ones. You may have some existing snacks or meals that are already vegetarian. If that is the case, then you’ll want to build on those existing food items and expand them to include similar vegetarian food items.
Many of the food items that fall under a vegetarian diet aren’t much different from foods you normally would eat, such as soups, cereals, pasta, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes. The challenge is learning how to introduce more of these foods into your daily eating regimen. Once you get the hang of it, the process really isn’t that difficult. For example, instead of eating a pasta dish with a meat sauce, you can opt for tofu, vegetables, and special seasonings to take place of meat in your sauce. There are plenty of meat substitutes including veggie burgers and even hot dogs that aren’t made of meat. It may take some getting used to, but if you gradually introduce these foods into your diet you should have no problem enjoying new meals.
Another way to make a vegetarian diet more manageable is to get a cookbook with recipes for vegetarians. Chances are you can make the majority of your favorite meals vegetarian-friendly. After a few weeks of putting in new foods and taking out old foods, reevaluate your eating regimen and see what changes you’ve made and then continue to expand on your new diet. When eating out, learn to resist temptation and ask for a menu with vegetarian dishes you can order from. When all else fails, turn to your favorite fruits, veggies, and nuts to help you curb your cravings for meat. Some vegetarians also include eggs and low-fat dairy products to help balance everything out.
