Valentine’s Day Goodies without the Guilt

Valentine’s Day Goodies without the GuiltAside from the romance and the flowers, hands down the best thing about celebrating Valentine’s Day is getting all of the goodies that satisfy our sweet tooth. From candy hearts to a variety of chocolates, it’s easy to lose yourself like a kid on Halloween night. However, if you’re watching your weight or counting calories, V-Day candies can give you the guilt-trip of the year. Check out the following Valentine’s Day recipes you and your sweetie can share, minus the guilt and extra pounds.

Who can say no to jello? You don’t have to be a child to enjoy making a special Valentine’s Day treat using this easy to make recipe. Following the theme of the holiday, take a packet of strawberry-flavored (low-fat if you like) jello and prepare according to the directions on the box. For added taste, toss in finely sliced pieces of strawberries near the end. After pouring the mixture into a baking dish, allow it to harden and use heart shaped cookie cutters to cut out the perfectly shaped jello to enjoy and share on your romantic day. For decoration, slice a strawberry in half and place it on top of each strawberry star.

Chocolate dipped strawberries are the perfect treat for Valentine’s Day. Instead of going to the store and buying them pre-made, gather together the right ingredients and make them together with your honey. Start by melting dark chocolate - or milk chocolate - over a double boiler or in the microwave. Be sure to use the right type of chocolate made for cooking. Once it’s ready, take each ripe, large strawberry and dip it halfway into the chocolate. As you pull it out, wait a few seconds for the chocolate to stop dripping and then place on wax paper and wait until the chocolate hardens. That’s it! Now you have a tasty and healthy snack to feed each other.

Start off your Valentine’s Day morning with a V-Day smoothie. Toss a handful of strawberries, frozen berries, banana and your favorite smoothie mix into your blender. For more flavor, add some orange juice and blend well. Break out your special glasses and pour your low-fat and yummy beverage and toast to a romantic day! Continue your Valentine’s Day themed treats by preparing heart-shaped grilled cheese sandwiches for you and your sweetheart. Simply take a slice of low-fat cheese and place between two slices of wheat bread and use a large heart-shaped cookie cutter to get your special V-Day inspired shape. After spraying non-stick spray onto your pan, throw in your sandwich and grill until both sides are golden brown and the cheese is completely melted.

Feeling a little festive? Get out your grill and make special V-Day kabobs that don’t involve a load of calories or fat. Take fresh grapes, cherry tomatoes and cubes of low-fat mozzarella and thread them onto kabob sticks. Lay them onto the grill and spread a helping of extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar for seasoning and rotate until each kabob is uniformly cooked.
