Before tackling how high fructose syrup negatively affects our health it helps to know what this ingredient actually is. Many have heard the term but fail to actually do the research to find out what it is. In a nutshell, high fructose corn syrup is a commonly used preservative and sweetener. It contains a combination of glucose and fructose, which is basically another form of sugar. Where can this ingredient be found? Virtually anywhere! Read the label of any soda, fruit drink and processed food and chances are high fructose corn syrup is among the list of ingredients. The reason it is so widely used in our food and beverages is because it has a longer shelf-life, which makes it ideal for use in products on store shelves - plus, it is cheaper to use.

 

So what’s the fuss about consuming food and drink items with this ingredient in it? The main concern is the fact that many people consume too many products with high fructose corn syrup it. It is believed that overconsumption of this sweetener can result in becoming obese. But it seems that the critics of high fructose corn syrup may have jumped the gun prematurely. The debate over whether this ingredient really can lead to someone becoming obese has spawned a number of medical studies. The most recent studies have reached a conclusion: there is no factual evidence to directly link overconsumption of high fructose corn syrup to obesity. However, that isn’t a green light to indulge all you want. This popular ingredient is another form of sugar and we all know that consuming too much sugar is in fact bad for you. The main way to enjoy your high fructose corn syrup is through moderation. If you want to make sure you and your family aren’t taking in too much sugar, including high fructose corn syrup, you’ll want to make sure to avoid purchasing food or drink items that contain added sugar. Additionally, choosing healthier options, such as canned fruit in its natural juices instead of heavy syrup and fresh fruit instead of flavored fruit drinks, can help you cut down on the amount of high fructose corn syrup you consume. Lowering the amount of processed foods you buy at the store as well as cutting back on drinking soda is also an extra way you can keep your sugar intake in check.
