Acne Camouflage Techniques and Tips by Michelle Dow

‘Tis the season for holiday parties and family gatherings – occasions for which women want to look and feel their best. But nothing can ruin a great holiday photo op like an unexpected blemish or blackhead that leaves you looking more Rudolph than sexy snow bunny.

As so many women know, acne isn’t just a problem for teenagers. An estimated 20 percent of women struggle with acne throughout their entire adult lives, with some experiencing acne for the first time in their 30s or 40s. Adult acne, especially in women, often results from hormonal changes, primarily occurring before and during menstruation, pregnancy and menopause.

The good news is acne can be treated, prevented and camouflaged if you know the right tips and techniques. Try working the following suggestions into your skin care regimen to keep your skin looking clear and bright.

·           Exfoliation is Key. An artist needs a clean canvas, and so do you. In order to maximize the effects of makeup and minimize the risk of further breakouts, your face needs to be clean and smooth. After washing with a gentle cleanser, apply a warm mask with alpha hydroxy to attain proper exfoliation. Never scrub the skin if active acne is apparent, as it will stimulate the oil glands and make acne worse.

·           Keep Oil at Bay. To make your makeup last all day without getting shiny, use an oil-inhibiting moisturizer to hydrate skin without feeling greasy. Starch-based agents in these products help control oil and give a matte look.

·           Conceal the Evidence. If you have noticeable redness, use an oil-free concealer that matches your skin tone to cover problem spots. Some available products even contain salicylic acid – known for its ability to unclog pores – so you get double the benefit by fighting acne while covering it up.

·           Lay the Foundation. With so many foundations available on the market, it can be hard to find the right one for you. Your best bet is to avoid anything oily or heavy. Opt for a water-based, easy-to-apply foundation that closely matches your skin tone.

·           Use the Right Tools. Liquid foundation should be applied with clean fingers or a disposable cosmetic sponge. Avoid reusing sponge applicators, as bacteria may build up on them and cause facial acne to worsen.

·           Stay Powder Fresh. If you use a pressed or loose powder, be sure to choose one that is “non-comedogenic” – a fancy word meaning “it won’t clog your pores.” Again, avoid spreading acne-aggravating bacteria by keeping tools clean. You should wash your powder brush at least once a week with warm water and a drop of shampoo.

·           Get Squeaky Clean. At the end of the day, it is crucial to thoroughly remove makeup and cleanse the face and neck. After washing your face, swipe an astringent-moistened cotton ball across your skin to be sure lingering makeup residue is gone. Any makeup left on your skin when you go to bed can cause irritation and oil build-up that can trigger breakouts.

Adapting these simple techniques can help you treat and conceal embarrassing breakouts, while creating good habits to prevent further acne in the future. Start today to reveal skin so clear it will ensure holiday cheer.
