How to Handle Rosacea

If you or someone you know has rosacea, what you probably know is that it is a chronic skin disorder that shows itself as large red blotches on the face that usually have small bumps that sometimes resemble pimples. What you may not know is that the reason for the redness is that groups of capillaries close of the surface of the skin become dilated, which can cause the skin tissue to swell and thicken. It may eventually become tender and sensitive to touch, and the redness can eventually become permanent.

If you are unsure if the symptoms you are having are rosacea, there are a few things you can look for to identify it. Although the red patches tend to look and act a lot like acne, the difference is that blackheads and whiteheads are almost never present. It usually begins at middle age or later, and usually affects the forehead, nose, cheekbones and chin. In severe cases, rosacea affects the size of the nose and includes eye irritation and a gritty feeling in the eyes (leading to blindness in the most severe cases). No one knows the cause of rosacea, but light skinned women between the ages of 30 and 50 tend to be more predisposed to the disorder.

There are many natural ways to fight against the annoying flare ups that characterize rosacea:

Keep Your Cool!

Rosacea is a condition that is aggravated by heat. Do not let your body overheat. Avoid saunas, steams, long hot showers and baths, and even allow your food and drink to cool before consuming. Do not expose your skin to the sun for too long. If you have an outbreak, as soon as you feel symptoms coming on apply a cold compress by soaking a cloth or paper towel in ice cold water and apply it to the flushed areas. The cold constricts the blood vessels and halts inflammation.

Try Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is an herbal resource that aids in cooling and healing the skin. You can use the gel, or the actual juice from inside the leaf of the fresh plant topically for best results. (some rosacea sufferers experience irritation from aloe. If you do, discontinue.)

Sweet Chamomile

Chamomile is known to soothe skin that is suffering from rosacea, so products containing chamomile are smart choices. For a soothing full body treatment, boil ˝ cup of the flowers in 2 – 4 cups of water. Strain and reserve liquid. Run a tepid bath (not hot) and pour in your chamomile solution. Soak for 15 – 20 minutes.
