In-Office Acne Treatments

In-Office Acne TreatmentsWhen acne breakouts resist common and over-the-counter treatments, sufferers are left to endure embarrassing and, often, painful acne. Left untreated, this type of acne can create scars and enlarged pores. There are new breakout technologies available for those prone to severe acne. These treatments should be considered only after carefully screening those administering the therapy and after considering the possible side effects.

Acne Photodynamic Treatment (PDT)

Hard-to-treat acne and acne scars that resist traditional treatment, are responding positively to this new procedure that treats resistant, active acne. Photodynamic therapy combines light and a special light-activated solution that targets and destroys acne activity. This treatment also reduces existing acne scars, leaving your skin smoother.

Photodynamic Acne Treatment applies a special solution called a photosensitizing agent to the skin that is activated by a specific wavelength of light. Many of these special solutions contain ALA, a natural product found in all humans throughout the body.  Patients of PDT show consistent major improvements.

Blue/Red Light Therapy

Sunlight was long known to improve acne, but could not be used as a viable treatment because of harmful UV rays. It has also been discovered that certain violet light found in sunlight kills acne bacteria by releasing singlet oxygen. This part of the light spectrum is just outside the ultraviolet and produces little if any tanning or sunburn. These lights are usually created by fluorescent lamps or bright LEDs.

Blue light works by emitting a cool blue light that activates a natural substance in the skin called porphyrins. When stimulated, Porphyrins kill acne bacteria below the surface of the skin. Blue light treatment is often accompanied with application of red light which has been shown to activate ATP in human skin cells and seems to improve response rates.

This procedure has no known side effects. Overall improvements are seen in 76% to 80% of patients treated over 3 months. Blue light therapy will not currently cure existing scars. Redness may take time to go away.

Photopneumatics (Photo = Light, Pneumatics = vacuum)

Photopneumatics is deep pore laser therapy that combines vacuum with a painless laser. The vacuum helps loosen and extract dirt, blackheads and excess oil from deep within your pores. The laser helps destroy acne causing bacteria, uneven skin tone, sun damaged skin, facial redness and veins as well as unwanted hair.

This therapy is quick, easy and painless and is reported to be effective on all skin types. In fact, many people have their treatments done during lunch without any downtime. Patients have also found that their skin feels tighter and has a healthy radiant glow following therapy.

The vacuum applies gentle pressure to your pores while the laser works to destroy the acne causing bacteria. This helps soften and remove blackheads, dead cells and other debris from deep in your pores resulting in radiant, clear skin that is purified from the inside out.
