Many adults in their 30s and older may be surprised to find that they are afflicted with acne, a skin condition mostly present in teens and young adults. There are a number of identifiable causes of adult acne, but not much attention has been given to the effect of skin care products, especially moisturizers. Apart from genetics, stress, hormones and old makeup, moisturizers for dry skin, creams and products used to cover up blemishes are also prime culprits where adult acne is concerned.

When moisturizer is used on skin already affected by acne, the condition can worsened as the mineral oil (used in most moisturizers) helps to clog pores. Clogged pores can cause inflammation because bacteria trapped in the blocked pores cannot get out. It is this trapped bacteria that promotes the development of pimples. This can only lead to or worsen acne.  Other skin care products can also lead to clogged pores providing the ideal breeding ground for bacteria. Covering up a few pimples with heavy make up may lead to a flare up of acne resulting in even more pimples.  

It has been found that the best way to treat dry skin is by using shielding lotion and not moisturizers. Shielding lotion is a skin care treatment that works with the skin’s natural protective properties to help keep skin hydrated. Shielding lotions not only help protect the skin’s outer layer against environmental irritants, but also help keep in natural oils secreted by the skin. Best of all for acne sufferers is the fact that the shielding lotions are non-greasy and so will not clog pores.

Switching from moisturizers to shielding lotions will help skin exfoliate and shed old skin which also clogs pores, revealing the newer skin beneath. Medical director of the Helton Skin and Laser Institute, located in California, Dr. Peter Helton, was quoted in a PR Web press release: “It’s (shielding lotion) a new technology that blends moisturizers with light silicone material that is like a liquid plastic film that bonds with the surface of your skin. It is like wearing a band-aid or a glove that helps to heal the skin. It keeps the moisture in and keeps the irritants out."

Understanding the role of moisturizers and makeup in causing certain types acne will help most of the almost 50 million Americans and millions more worldwide, to prevent and control the affliction.
