Go into any store’s skincare section and you’ll see tons of various skincare products. Skin conditions that once required a trip to the dermatologist’s office can now be handled by purchasing the right items. The battle against acne in particular has caused dozens of top name brands in the industry to create their own acne product lines. Turn on any television and you’ll see commercials for the latest acne solutions that you can use by simply ordering the product online. The possibilities are endless. But does this mean that you no longer need to see a dermatologist about your acne?
Technically, seeing a dermatologist about your acne problems isn’t mandatory. It is a decision that is ultimately up to you. However, you may have to make an appointment if you feel that your acne requires special attention. The best way to make this decision is to reflect on the state of your acne, how it affects you (if at all) and what alternatives you’ve already tried out.
If your acne is mild and you only suffer from a few breakouts that clear up easily with any over-the-counter acne product then you more than likely have a good handle on the situation and don’t need the assistance of a dermatologist. If your acne stays about the same or gets worse, even though you’ve tried OTC products, and your goal is to clear up your acne forever, then you may want to seek out a dermatologist who can prescribe a stronger acne medication than what you can find in the store. If your acne is very severe and is making you feel insecure about yourself, then make an appointment to see a dermatologist right away. He/she will have the means to find a treatment that will be suitable for your skin’s needs.
Of course there is nothing wrong with playing it safe, either. If you’re experiencing acne and don’t know where to start or what products to buy, consulting a dermatologist can put you on the right path and can help you avoid spending time and money on store-bought products that may not provide you with the results you want. Dermatologists are there to help you with your skin issues so making an appointment can only help you. During your consultation be sure to ask any and all questions you may have. Report the symptoms you are dealing with and if you have tried acne products beforehand but without any success, give the dermatologist the names of those products. This will prevent him/her from recommending those same items.
