Tackle Those Acne Scars & Stop Them Before They Appear

Tackle Those Acne Scars & Stop Them Before They AppearHaving acne isn’t a picnic for anyone, young or old. Not only does this well known skin condition result in unsightly breakouts and red, inflamed skin, it can also bring about acne scars. Even though some cases of acne have been known to disappear or gradually fade on its own in time, the presence of acne scars can still create feelings of embarrassment and insecurity. However, there are ways to treat and even prevent such scars from appearing in the first place.

One of the best ways to treat acne scars is to first treat your acne. In most cases, treatment for the scars themselves won’t be possible if you are currently dealing with a fresh breakout. Depending on the feedback of a dermatologist or other skincare professional, do what you can to eliminate your breakouts. This will create a new slate for you to tackle the scars. Research is also another part of the solution. The more you know about your skin, the ways acne works and the various causes for the breakouts and scarring, the better equipped you will be when it comes time to treat your scars.

Perhaps one of the most important pieces of information to know about acne and acne scars is that the time after an acne breakout has occurred is the most vital time to effectively treat and/or prevent scarring. Once an acne breakout has healed, the area of the complexion where the lesion was located can become reddened or discolored in appearance. If the area remains undisturbed by future breakouts and lesions, then the chance of scarring decreases. If you happen to notice that your most recent breakout may result in scarring, you’ll want to address the problem right away before the scar forms. The first and foremost action you’ll want to avoid is picking or scratching the area. This is a surefire way to encourage acne scars. Using alpha hydroxy acids, beta hydroxy acids and/or tretinoin products are all viable treatments that help keep the affected area clean and assist the skin during the healing process.

It is important to realize that the time after an acne breakout/lesion has faded, which is known as the post-inflammatory stage, can make or break whether you will get an acne scar or not. Using the treatments mentioned above give your complexion the best possible chance of healing itself in a way that won’t involve any scarring. An additional step that should be included is keeping your complexion away from excessive sun exposure. If you must be in the sun for a prolonged period of time, make sure you have sunscreen or sun block on hand. The sun’s UV rays can work against the skin’s healing process during the post-inflammatory stage, which can bring about scarring.
