When you think of baking soda, perhaps the first image that comes to mind is the box of baking soda sitting somewhere on your refrigerator shelf. While it is true that this common household item is ideal for controlling odors and a couple of other uses around the home, you may be surprised to know that you can actually use baking soda in a do-it-yourself skincare recipe. If you’re looking for something new to try on your complexion, you’ll want to try out the following recipes.
Have you had a long, rough day? Are you in need of a soothing and calming bath to restore your senses and give you better peace of mind? Instead of taking a traditional bubble bath or using salts and essential oils, try something different by adding baking soda. All you have to do is draw yourself a bath and add ½ cup of baking soda. This will leave your skin baby soft from head to toe. If you want to be a bit fancier, you can also use this household item to create your own bath salts. Mix the following ingredients together in a bowl: 2 ½ cups of baking soda, ½ cup of cornstarch and two cups of cream of tartar. Afterwards, put the mixture into a container with a lid and store at room temperature. When you’re ready to use your homemade baking soda bath salts, add ¼ cup to your fully drawn bath water.
You can also use baking soda for your beauty needs. To exfoliate your complexion using a new recipe, simply add three parts baking soda to one part water and make a paste. After cleansing, apply your homemade exfoliating scrub to your complexion and then rinse with warm water. Or you can mix baking soda with uncooked oatmeal in a blender to create a great quality facial scrub.
Need to take care of rough elbows, feet and/or hands? Again, baking soda can be the key ingredient in your next homemade skincare recipe. To slough off layers of rough, dry skin on your elbows create a paste by combining baking soda with water and generously rub onto your elbows. Then rinse with water. Treat your footsies to a homemade soak by adding three tablespoons of baking soda to a basin filled with warm water. This will effectively soften calluses and leave your feet soft and smooth. Refresh your hands by rubbing them with a mixture of three parts baking soda to one part liquid soap and then rinse afterwards. Not only does this recipe keep your hands soft and supple, it is also great for removing odors left on your hands after cooking, such as garlic, fish or onion.
