Each time a new ingredient is discovered in the anti-aging industry, everyone celebrates. With the public’s fascination with youth and beauty, celebrities have become coveted spokespeople when it comes to what products they use and why. DMAE is the next star in the spotlight. DMAE, short for dimenthylaminoethanol, is a naturally occurring nutrient that is found in fish, specifically wild salmon. Studies show that DMAE has the uncanny ability to tighten and firm when applied topically to the skin. It achieves this by preventing and reversing certain proteins and removes a pigment known as lipofuscin from the skin, which are responsible for age spots. All of these abilities has allowed DMAE to become a widely used ingredient in anti-aging skincare products.
Surprisingly, DMAE has been around for some time and is also known for its effectiveness in treating cognitive disorders. But lately, it has become better associated as an instant face lift without the need for surgery, boosting it to anti-aging fame. In terms of aging, DMAE is able to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin by interacting with skin cells. When this happens, the skin cells swell with fluid, resulting in thicker and smoother skin. The effects eventually fade but with daily application, the results can be maintained for some time. Additionally, DMAE has also shown potential to be a potent antioxidant that is able to protect the skin from free radical damage and effectively slow down the aging process.
Although DMAE has been able to stand its ground against other ingredients in the anti-aging industry, medical experts are quick to advise that caution be used when deciding to use products containing DMAE as its main ingredient. Some studies have discovered that the presence of DMAE can interrupt healthy skin cell division and longevity. The results from this disruption have yet to be known, causing some medical experts to push for further studies. While DMAE is also available in pill form, medical experts say this form of anti-aging has yet to produce hard core evidence of change in the skin’s appearance.
If you’re interested in trying a skin firming product that contains DMAE, be sure to talk to your doctor or dermatologist about your skin’s needs and your concerns about aging. Get their feedback and when you do purchase a DMAE skin firming item, do a patch test first to see if any allergic reactions to your skin occur.
