Is Telomerase the Answer to Aging?

Is Telomerase the Answer to Aging?Oftentimes the whole anti-aging matter tends to make consumers turn into mini-scientists. And why not? In order to better understand how we can take care of ourselves, it is vital to know how the aging process works, how certain elements and factors can help or harm our complexions and so on. Of course trying to understand the more complex matters such as the role telomerase plays in cellular aging could be a tough one to understand, but not if you know how to break down this concept.

The first step to understanding what telomerase is and how it works is to know that it is an enzyme that occurs naturally in the body. How does it play into anti-aging? As we get older our bodies inevitably change - and not just in terms of the fine lines, wrinkles and gravity taking its toll - but inside our bodies as well. The cells that keep us youthful, bright and bushy-tailed tend to slow down in production or even die off. This definitely applies to the body’s chromosomes. At the end of those chromosomes are telomerase enzymes. Aging causes the telomeres to grow smaller and smaller until they die.

Still not sure how this plays into the aging process? Studies show that after giving mice a larger dose of telomerase, the subjects showed signs of a type of reverse aging. Scientists have used their findings to study the enzyme much closer, in the hopes of eventually using it on humans as a way to improve the process of cellular aging. What makes this discovery so potentially great for the anti-aging process is the fact that this enzyme actually reverses the aging process - not just slow it down like other miracle products or ingredients are able to do.

While there is much speculated buzz about telomerase’s ability to possibly provide society with an anti-aging pill, the experts say there is still a lot of testing to do. Before you put yourself on the wait list for this anti-aging gem, it is important to note that while the enzyme shows promise, it may also carry some risk - namely cancer. Although telomerase has the knack for knocking down the signs of cellular aging on its rear end, scientists have also found that the enzyme has a tendency to boost tumor growth. Definitely not a good sign. Because of this, studies are still being conducted to find out whether it is possible to create a strain of telomerase that will not develop any type of cancer but will instead promote healthy cells as well as prevent any damage to a person’s DNA.

Until that happens, consumers will have to stick to their current anti-aging regimen of skincare products. Over time and with much research, perhaps there will be an anti-aging pill that is safe for the market within our lifetime.
