How to Say Goodbye to Dreaded Age Spots

How to Say Goodbye to Dreaded Age SpotsAs hard as most people try to hide their true age, their skin tends to be a dead giveaway. However, certain conditions and signs can fool just about anyone, especially when they show up way before their time. If you’re suffering from age spots and other signs of skin discoloration, chances are you’ll want to know what your options are for getting rid of them and restoring your youthful and vibrant complexion.

Surprisingly, getting older has nothing to do with getting age spots. The reality is that anyone of any age can pretty much experience these troublesome spots - and it all has to do with sun exposure. Once again, the sun’s ultraviolet rays have found a way to cause more problems for your skin. The presence of sunlight on the skin can cause the production of melanin to become increased, which usually results in a tan, or in other cases, age spots. This unsightly condition tends to crop up on areas of the skin that aren’t covered up. True age spots caused by aging tend to appear all over the skin, as a result of the years of sun damage on the skin. So if you’ve got some time before old age sets in, it’s best to do right by your skin early on through the use of a broad spectrum sunscreen product that wards off both UVA and UVB rays. Such age spots love to make a home on your face, hands, chest, and neck so be wary of how much skin you expose on sunny days and make sure they are properly protected.

There are ways to treat your age spots if you already have them - mainly through the use of certain products. It helps to do as much research as you can about any new product you haven’t tried before, as well as talking with your doctor or dermatologist, who can help you narrow down your options. Skin bleaching products are typically popular for lightening the appearance of age spots. Hydroquinone is a commonly used ingredient as well as kojic acid (those with darker complexions, will find kojic acid and vitamin C bleaching agents more friendly to their complexion). These products work by blocking the enzyme responsible for producing more melanin. There are plenty of over-the-counter skin bleaching products you can choose from, but make sure you pick the right concentration. Your dermatologist will be the best person to figure this out for you. Because bleaching products can be very potent, it is important to read all the directions carefully. It is important to apply the product only to the area that needs it. Doing otherwise can result in bleaching the wrong area and experiencing skin discoloration as well as age spots.

There are also certain treatments that are used to remove age spots. Common procedures include skin sanding, freezing, the use of acids, lasers, and electric needles. Such treatments have their own risks and scarring are common side effects. This is why it is important to learn as much as you can about each procedure in order to determine which one is the best for you. Laser treatments tend to do less damage to the skin and are more accurate in targeting the age spots while leaving the rest of the skin intact.
