Sinkers, Saggers and Squeezers

Sinkers, Saggers and SqueezersNowadays it seems that everything can be explained through science. Even the act of getting older continues to be demystified through medical findings. Now even plain ole wrinkles really aren’t that plain. Medical professionals have found that wrinkles come in their own categories and can mean something different for each person who falls under the sinkers, saggers or squeezers category.

It’s hard to avoid the fact that we’ll eventually get old. Most women don’t actually mind getting older- it’s the signs of aging that send women into a tizzy. Because of the obsession with retaining a younger-looking complexion, the anti-aging and beauty industry has continued to make billions upon billions of dollars each year. However, if consumers don’t know what their skin needs they will essentially be wasting their money. This is why it is important to seek the advice of a dermatologist or aesthetic specialist to help you determine how your skin is aging, what your problem areas will be and what treatment and products you should be using.

As if that isn’t enough of a challenge, new information has recently come to light that even the types of wrinkles you have will decide what route to take on your journey to anti-aging.

The three most common types of facial wrinkles are sinkers, saggers and squeezers. These names are pretty self-explanatory. Sinker wrinkles are characterized as a line in the skin that develops due to the loss of either collagen or hyaluronic acid. This happens because of repeated facial expressions: smile lines around the mouth, and lines that appear on the upper lip, which are commonly referred to as “smoker’s lines” as a result of continuously pursing the lips. Typical treatments for sinkers include the use of hyaluronic acid dermal fillers, which physicians use to fill in the creases, allowing the gel to become easily absorbed into the skin. The result is smoother, softer and a naturally younger-looking complexion. Collagen-based fillers may also be used for sinkers.

As you can tell by the name, saggers are wrinkles that hang on the skin. When gravity hits over time, the skin loses its firmness and elasticity so it has no choice but to sag loosely on the face. Common places on the face where saggers appear include the eyelids, around the jaw line, and droppy bags under the eyes. Unfortunately, the only surefire way to correct saggers is through surgery. Be sure to consult with a licensed and reputable cosmetic or plastic surgeon about your options.

The last type of wrinkle is the squeezer. This final category of wrinkles occurs when the muscles within the brow become overactive. The result: deep, vertical lines that make a person appear angry, stressed or tired. So far the one treatment that has shown any promise in alleviating the moderate to severe squeezer lines between the brows is Botox.
