Moisturizing is an essential step in dry skincare treatment and not just any lotion can handle the job. Regular store-bought lotions that aren’t formulated for dry or problematic skin tend to dry the skin out even more, requiring multiple applications. Even though the outer layer of skin acts as a barrier, certain skin conditions can cause this layer to be stripped away, leaving the skin vulnerable.
Shielding lotions serve as an extra barrier of defense for problem skin and help alleviate the itching, redness and irritation. Shielding lotions work as a natural skincare product that repairs and restores the skin’s natural moisture balance. Unlike other treatments, shielding lotions do not block the skin’s ability to breathe, instead this type of lotion works with the skin itself to prevent future damage from irritants, chemicals and other environmental pollutants that can wreak havoc. Traditional moisturizers may provide a temporary solution but often they only serve to cover up symptoms by creating a greasy, thick layer of moisture on top of the skin’s surface, preventing proper ventilation. Once the moisturizer wears off, the dry skin remains, making the condition worse. Unlike these products, the formula in a shielding lotion creates a strengthening bond with the outer layer of skin, keeping bad irritants out while sealing the moisture and natural oils in.
Eczema and psoriasis sufferers can also benefit from shielding lotions to help control outbreaks, rashes and calm upset skin. When there is balance, your skin’s natural oils and moisture are protected, allowing damaged skin to heal faster.
However, you don’t have to have problem skin to use shielding lotion. We come into contact with hazardous irritants and chemicals on a daily basis, especially those who work in food services or occupations where hand washing is frequent. Soaps, dishwashing liquids, colorants, and antibacterial products all have the potential to cause trouble for your skin. Even non-dry skin types can suffer from the same symptoms that result from frequent hand washing. Using a shielding lotion repairs the damage and reinforces the skin’s natural ability to heal itself and replenish moisture and hydration.
Shielding lotions don’t wash or rub off, which helps speed up the healing process. If you suffer from any of the skin types mentioned, or are prone to dry, cracked hands as a result of frequent hand washing, you can purchase shielding lotion at any fine online retailer or have one prescribed by your dermatologist.
