How to Deal with Enlarged Pores

How to Deal with Enlarged PoresWhile pores are an essential component of our skin, allowing hair to grow and lubrication of the skin to occur, enlarged pores are unattractive and no fun to deal with. How do pores become enlarged? Genetics is often to blame. Oily skin and sun damage can also contribute to the appearance of large pores. While there is no cure for enlarged pores, there are ways to effectively reduce their appearance, and these range from concealing tactics, to home treatments and even spa offerings. For those who are dealing with numerous enlarged pores, your dermatologist also has some treatment options available. The key is to find the best treatment option for you so that you can get on the road to clearer, more beautiful skin.

Topical Treatments

Exfoliant cleansers are a good place to start in the war against enlarged pores. These products will slough off the outer layer of dry skin cells on your face, leaving you with a smoother, more radiant complexion. Be careful not to use these types of cleansers too often, since irritation can result. Once or twice a day should do the trick to get clearer, cleaner and smoother skin. Another good topical solution that works on the same basic principle is beta hydroxyl or alpha hydroxyl products. These ingredients will also effectively strip the skin of the outer layer of dead skin cells, leaving smoother skin underneath and a reduced appearance of enlarged pores.

Spa Treatments

Spas will also offer a variety of treatments to get rid of the appearance of enlarged pores. The focus at the spa is to unclog the pore, which will allow the sebum inside to drain out. The next step will be to eliminate bacteria, black heads and oil from the area. The edges of the pore will then be smoothed to diminish the appearance and an increase in collagen production will help to heal the area from the inside out. Most spas will offer some sort of treatment for enlarged pores, and you can check with your location to find out exactly what types of treatment they offer.

Options at your Dermatologist

For very noticeable large pores, your dermatologist might have some treatment options for you as well. The most common treatment for large pores is mircrodermabrasion. This process will remove the outer layer of skin, leaving the skin underneath smoother and clearer. Microdermabrasion will also stimulate collagen production, which will give heal the skin, promote elasticity and give a smoother, healthier look overall. Other possible treatments with your dermatologist might include laser resurfacing and chemical peels, but these procedures are not generally done for enlarged pores alone. However, if you have another condition to seek treatment for, you may enjoy the additional benefit of a reduced appearance of your enlarged pores.

Enlarged pores are not particularly attractive, but they are harmless and can often be left alone without a need for special treatment. However, if you are uncomfortable with the appearance of your enlarged pores, there are treatment options available.
