Atypical Moles

It is a skin disorder which is characterized by the presence of many mole like tumors. Most of the people have ten to twenty moles on their body. People suffering from this disorder have more than hundred moles which are unusual in size and structure. The size, location and coloring of these moles vary and they are larger as compared to normal moles and have irregular borders. People suffering from atypical mole are at a greater risk of developing cancer of the skin in the form of malignant melanoma. Also known as Clark`s nevi or dysplastic nevi, these moles are considered to be precancerous and they are more likely to convert into melanoma. While looking at an atypical mole, one can see features similar to that of melanoma such as asymmetry, variation in color or irregular borders. When seen under a microscope, the features are in between a melanoma and normal mole.

Most of the experts are of the opinion that an atypical mole is at a higher risk of converting into melanoma as compared to a normal mole. A change in the appearance of the moles must be taken seriously by the patients as it may be an indication of onset of cancerous disease. Although the initial diagnosis is based on physical examination but a biopsy is required to be done in order to make the precise diagnosis.

Cause

Atypical moles may be caused due to genetic reasons. Exposure of the skin to sunlight is also considered to be the reason for the development of atypical moles.

Symptoms

The symptoms of atypical mole are characterized by a sudden change in size, shape, color or sensation. If the size is ¼ inch or more and includes a number of colors which often includes black with irregular edges and an abnormal surface which has scales and flakes, then these are the symptoms of atypical mole.

Treatment

If the atypical moles are changing color, size or shape over a period of weeks to months, they should be removed immediately. If the moles are bleeding or itching, they should be removed immediately as they might have turned into a melanoma. The only treatment for removal of an atypical mole is surgery. Cutting off an atypical mole leaves an everlasting scar. If it seems that an atypical mole resembles an early melanoma, the doctor recommends its early removal.

People with a family history of melanoma must get a complete skin examination every year and should apply sunscreen lotion on the exposed areas.
