Erythema Multiforme is a self limiting, acute, inflammatory skin eruption. It is an allergic reaction and has a number of causes. People of all ages are affected by it but children and young adults are more prone to be affected by it. It starts as a red rash on the soles, back of the hands and palms. In case the condition is severe it can spread to the mouth, trunk and face. A few people may have Erythema Multiforme only in the mouth.
Cause
Erythema Multiforme can be caused by many factors which include allergic reactions to fungal, bacterial and viral infections. Other causes include sensitivity to drugs and food. It can also occur in association with other disorders. Herpes of the genitals, Cold sores and Mycoplasma pneumonia are the most common causes of Erythema Multiforme. The condition is not contagious. Few people can have recurrent episode of it generally because of herpes infection or cold sores.
Symptoms
As the skin lesion ages it often looks like a small target with a purple or dusky center bordered by red rings. Erythema Multiforme is common in people under the age of twenty. It is rarely occurs below the age of three over the age of fifty. Males are more likely to be affected by it as compared to females.
The early lesion is either a dull red macule or an uticarial plaque. In about 1to 2 days it can expand to a maximum of two cm. As the intermediate rings develop they become pale, edematous and raised.
Treatmant
The first step in the treatment of Erythema Multiforme includes the finding of the cause and then removing it. Here it should be kept in mind that this may not always be possible. Erythema Multiforme minor does not need any treatment as it is typically asymptomatic. The lesion would itself clear in two to four weeks. In cases of herpes virus induced Erythema Multiforme minor then Valtrex or Zovirax pills will be helpful. The pills will be helpful only if they are started in a few days. Low doses of Valtrex or Zovirax will help prevent it from recurring.
Any earlier treatment which has caused of the rash must be stopped. This in itself is the best treatment. The treatment should be stopped only if advised by the doctor. Application of mild cortisone on the spot along with wet compress will help clear the lesion.
