It is a type of a rash which occurs in the lower legs. It is commonly found in women and it leads to the formation of several spots. Shiny red brown patches are formed. The center of the patch is often yellowish and might develop open sores which are slow to heal. A biopsy is required for diagnosing Necrobiosis Lipoidica.
This disease is found in people suffering from diabetes and people with a family history of diabetes. The exact reason for this disease is not known. It is quite difficult to treat this disease. This disease progresses slowly and remains slightly but in rare cases it would clear up completely. It does not show any symptoms and is not painful until it ulcerates.
Cause
The cause of this disease is not known and it usually strikes people suffering from diabetes.
Symptoms
There are very few symptoms of this disease. The rashes which develop on the legs are raised and these rashes have shiny red patches. The center of the rash is generally yellow. If one is suffering from this disease then the rashes might develop into sores which would not be pleasant to have as these sores that might appear would be very slow to heal and could cause some discomfort when they are appearing on the body. It takes a long time for the rashes to disappear in case one has taken a long time for getting it diagnosed by a doctor.
Treatment
The treatment of this disease is difficult. At times it responds to topical cortisone cream if it is covered with an airtight dressing. One can also use cortisone injections for treating this disease. These injections are effective as compared to cortisone creams. This disease goes through stages of activity and inactivity. One cannot predict when the condition might flare up. It has also been found out that UV treatment can control this condition. A baby aspirin taken
every day along with other medicines which results in thinning of blood can help in treating this disease. It has also been found that prednisone pills which are steroids can be helpful in treating severe cases. In case ulcer develops, one should seek medical advice. Although the severity of the lesions remains unaffected by control of diabetes, it is advised that the blood sugar levels should be maintained between four and eight mmol/l in order to avoid problems of secondary infection within the lesion.
