Pityriasis Rubra Pilaris

It is not a single condition but a group of unusual eruptions which causes red scaly patches that contain dry plugged pores. It might affect the entire body or just the knees and elbows. This disease affects people over the age of forty but at times children also might get affected by it. The cause of this disease is still not known. It has also been found that minor burns rashes and infections trigger it. It has been found that this condition has been mistaken for psoriasis at times.

A dermatologist diagnosis it when this condition is suspected. A biopsy is conducted for detecting pityriasis rubra pilaris. This condition is suspected after the pills, creams and UV light treatments don’t have any effect on the condition.

This condition starts as a patchy rash on the scalp, chest or face. In a few weeks it extends downwards and often covers a larger part of the body.   It does not affect regions of old scars and injuries. The rash formed is of orange red color and the soles and palms become thickened. One can also feel rough, dry plugs within the rash. The itching tends to get severe at first and later on gets lessened.

The outlook towards the disease depends on its type. Although the treatment can be helpful but it cannot guarantee clearing of either of the two most common types. The classic adult type vanishes after two or three years or it may take a longer time whereas the circumscribed juvenile type last for a lifetime. The atypical juvenile type runs in families but it has been found out the instances of this condition are not hereditary.

Cause

The exact cause of this condition is simply not known. It is not an infection and hence cannot be passed on to others.

Symptoms

The rashes formed tend to be itchy in the early stages. The thick skin on the palms and soles tends to split and become painful. It might become difficult to walk. One may also experience shivering.

Treatment

Topical medication such as emollients might be used for relieving symptoms of dryness and cracking. In severe cases acitretin or isotretinoin might be useful. The best treatment for this disease is Soriatane or Accutane pills. These medicines have some minor side effects but they do not cause any kind of serious harm to the body.   Another form of effective treatment is the use of methotrexate tablets but can have serious side effects.
