While young, teach your kids about proper sun care. Being young involves a lot of physical activity and playing in the sun, not to mention the family trips to the beach during the hot summer days. All of these prolonged periods of exposure to the sun without the proper care can lead to a higher risk of developing skin cancer in your child’s future as he/she gets older. Be sure to teach your kids why applying sunscreen before and during time out in the sun is important. Demonstrate how to apply sunscreen and teach them how to do it themselves when they are old enough to do so without any hazards. Always follow the warnings on the labels to keep sunscreen products out of the hands of young children without supervision to avoid improper use or consumption.
One way to motivate your kids to use sunscreen is to buy each one their own small bottle of sunscreen or sun block and explain to them that they are responsible for it and the safety of their skin. Reward them with a treat or game to encourage the routine of applying sunscreen or sun block before going outside to play. Also explain the importance of wearing hats and sunglasses early on to protect their skin from the sun’s rays and keep their eyesight in good shape.
In the preteen years, sit down with your son or daughter and explain the need for a daily skincare routine. Make sure they fully understand the purpose of cleanser, toner and moisturizer, as well as how to properly use them. Learn how to identify their skin type and then teach them about how to use the proper products. Be sure to include the fact that maintaining a good skincare routine will keep their skin looking at its best. When your preteen begins using skincare products early on, this will groom them for good habits when they head off to college and ultimately go off on their own.
If needed, take your child to visit a dermatologist who can provide more detailed information about how your child can properly care for their skin and recommend the right products for them to use. Since many teens tend to be forgetful or negligent of what is good for them, make sure you stay on top of their routine. Be a nag if you have to. This is especially with sun care, as teens tend to spend the most time outdoors. For daughters, inform them of the advantages of using makeup that contains SPF in order to keep them looking great while staying safe from UV rays.
