Many people are concerned with the skin that is around their eyes. Sometimes it can be hard to determine what the cause and cure is for some of the most common problems, such as dark circles, puffiness, and wrinkles.
Dark Circles
Dark circles are a common and usually temporary condition. Essentially, dark circles are a discoloration of the blood vessels under the eyes and can be caused by a variety of factors, including heredity, stress, lack of sleep, allergies, nutrition, medication, and sun exposure.
There are many treatments that exist, and most of them are very effective in reducing the appearance of dark circles. Over-the-counter skin creams that contain vitamin C, vitamin K, and alpha hydroxy acid work especially well and will usually diminish under-eye circles. Aggressive treatment options, such as bleaching or laser therapy, can be used to treat chronic and severe dark circles.
In addition to treatment, there are also many different under-eye concealers on the market that can cover-up dark circles when they appear.
Puffiness
Mild puffiness around the eyes is typically a temporary condition that results from stress, fluid retention, allergies, or a lack of sleep. In very rare cases, puffiness around the eyes may be a sign of a serious medical condition.
If the puffiness around your eyes is severe and persistent, you may want to consult a doctor. Puffiness that results from allergies can often be eliminated with allergy medications. If the condition is not from allergies and seems temporary, there are many different treatments that can reduce mild puffiness around the eyes, including skin care creams, facial masks, and cold compresses.
Creams that include Vitamin C or antioxidants will help to hydrate the skin and reduce puffiness around the eyes. A less expensive alternative is a cool tea bag compress. Tea contains tannins and caffeine, which will help reduce the swelling that can temporarily occur around the eyes.
Wrinkles
Wrinkles around the eyes, most commonly known as “crow’s feet”, are extremely common. The wrinkles are typically a result of aging and occur from years of laughing, smiling, and squinting.
There are treatments available to help prevent the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes. Many skin cream products also exist to smooth the appearance of wrinkles that have already formed. Creams that contain Vitamin A are especially good for treating crow’s feet, as are products that gently exfoliate skin around the eyes. If used regularly, products that contain antioxidants will also stimulate the skin and help repair damage done by environmental stress.
