It is important to remember that a child’s skin is very different than adult skin and as such it will respond to certain products differently. Young children have complexions that are much more sensitive so parents must be wary of the ingredients contained in standard Halloween makeup. Even those that are labeled for use on the face can sometimes harbor ingredients that may react negatively with your child’s skin. Even homemade makeup recipes should be used wisely. Check online for natural recipes that use ingredients you know will be safe on your child’s face.
If you plan on using traditional Halloween makeup, choose the kind that is easily removed with soap and water. You’ll find liquid makeup and flat pancake makeup formulas that are ideal for use on younger skin. Additionally, this type of Halloween makeup is lightweight and more comfortable to wear for a long period of time. One thing to keep in mind is that young children have the tendency to rub their eyes and touch their faces a lot. That means you should take care to avoid using any Halloween makeup that could cause eye irritation. Red dye in particular is very painful when it comes into contact with the eye area so avoid putting any type of makeup on your child’s eye area that contains this color - the same goes with red lipstick around the eyes as a makeup effect.
For costumes calling for the use of glue on the face, absolutely avoid using regular glue that is not meant for the face. While spirit gum is a common type of glue used for Halloween makeup, this should not be used on your child’s skin because it can be hard to remove and can rip off the top layers of skin. Again, a child’s complexion is much more sensitive than an adult’s. Instead of using spirit gum on your child’s face, use good ole corn syrup from home as a natural adhesive.
Other types of items to avoid putting on your child’s face this Halloween include makeup remover that contains an alcohol base and liquid latex. Anything with alcohol in it will be too harsh on the skin and liquid latex can cause skin irritation and rashes.
Play it safe by sticking to face paints that are non-toxic and Halloween makeup items that use ingredients made especially for use on young skin.
