Often during the winter your lips can start getting chapped and flaky and sometimes just applying a moisturizer isn’t enough for your lips. It is important that you get rid of the flaky skin on your lips without chaffing and irritating them more. The best way to remove the flakes of skin on your lips is to take a warm, wet, washcloth and gently buff the flakes off your lips. Then you can apply a good moisturizing salve to your lips and it will be more effective.

One thing that people forget in the winter is that the sun can still do damage, especially to the sensitive lips. When you are purchasing your lip balm for your lips you should purchase one that has sunscreen in it as well. Usually you can find lip balm that has a SPF of 15 and this will help protect your lips from the harmful rays of the sun. Try to by a lip balm with an a gentle exfoliating ingredient such as Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) in order to constantly help renew the skin on your lips and enable higher penetration of the other moisturizing ingredients in the balm.

Another way to keep lips moisturized is by actually using your facial moisturizer on your lips as well. Every time you moisturize your face you should use this same lotion on your lips during the winter. You may want to be careful to keep from getting it in your mouth, but it works great to keep your lips soft and kissable.

Lip balm is an important thing to keep on hand during the winter months. Before you put on your lipstick each day be sure that you put on a coat of lip balm first to help keep your lips moisturized throughout the day. Using lipstick that has moisturizers in it is a great help as well. You should also be sure to apply your lip balm at night before you go to bed to keep your lips from drying out at night. Be sure not to lick your lips too because this can keep your lips constantly dried out and chapped.
