Product Safety: Who`s In Charge and How Do You Stay Informed?

Product SafetyConsumers of skin-care products are notorious for their impulsive purchases, perhaps because we are constantly searching for the fountain of youth and so many new product lines claim to bottle it. It`s not news that the competition among skin-care lines is fierce and if your looking for something new and innovative, all you need to do is wait five minutes. However, we encourage you to take a moment and consider your personal care products more carefully.

Becoming More Aware

Consider that our skin is the largest organ of our body and that it is responsible for protecting us from the agents in our environment that may harm us, as well as expelling any agent that our body needs to rid itself of. Everything we apply to our skin enters our bloodstream and affects every system of our body. Hence, shouldn`t we be aware of the safety of what we`re putting on our skin and in our bodies?

Product Safety and The Parties Responsible

In the United States, the department responsible for overseeing the safety of products such as cosmetics, perfumes and deodorants, soaps and shampoos, and other personal care products, is the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Luckily, the FDA receives very few complaints regarding cosmetic safety. Still, consumers are encouraged to be aware of the ingredients in their product lines since most are not reviewed by the FDA prior to their introduction. How does the FDA enforce the safety policy for personal care products? Although the FDA claims that the system has worked well thus far, consumers need to be aware that no product is investigated by the FDA until an initial complaint is made, at which time the product has already been manufactured and distributed to eager consumers.

Is There A Health Threat?

Understandably, not every product we use as consumers can be all-natural and side-effect free. After all, we live in the real world. Furthermore, the FDA reassures us that even the questionable ingredients in most personal care lines are absorbed in too small amounts to bring harm and that it is the absorption of large quantities of harmful ingredients over an extended period of time that may bring possible harm or side-effects. Ingredients that are blatantly harmful are continually being removed from products or these product lines are removed from the market.

In conclusion, it is up to you as a consumer to choose which products are for you. However, we encourage you to become aware of what you apply to the largest organ of your body - educate yourself, make informed decision, and shop carefully. There are several resources online that offer endless information about personal care products, their safety, and how to choose the healthiest products. In fact, most major product lines have joined with numerous safe-product campaigns and organizations in an effort to provide the public with the safest and healthiest personal care products possible.
