These skin tone corrector products focus on eliminating skin discoloration, age spots and brown spots caused by prolonged exposure to the sun know as hyperpigmentation. These blemishes can cause the skin to look years older than it really is.
Most products are focusing on the reduction or elimination of brown spots which are caused when pigment cells no longer turn off after tanning. While brown spots can appear at any age, they become more and more prevalent the older we get because pigment cells are more apt to not “shut off” as we age. By stimulating the body’s ability to naturally produce collagen, skin tone correctors cause melanin to produce as it did when you were younger. This, in turn, causes pigment cells to stop producing dark spots. The results are brighter, more radiant skin. This treatment is then combined with exfoliation, a well-know method used to achieve smoother, softer, more even-toned skin.
Products using undecylenoyl phenylalanine (UPA) may have a real advantage in the fight against age spots. UPA is considered by many to be a hyperpigmentation breakthrough. In vitro testing of UPA shows that this ingredient works differently than previously used ingredients in the fight for flawless skin. It successfully lightens skin without causing irritation, discomfort or skin discoloration.
The two main ingredients in most skin tone correction products are niacinamide (Vitamin B3) and N-acetyl glucosamine. These work by interrupting the melanin synthesis pathway. UPA prevents the melanin synthesis from even starting. In vitro testing shows that the combination of UPA, N-acetyl glucosamine and niacinamide reduce melanin production without damaging skin cultures. The result is bright, even-toned skin with little or no side effects.
These products are also adding Vitamin E help stop free radicals before they can cause damage to the skin’s surface.
According to many researchers in the skincare field, new skin tone correctors may be the answer many have been looking for. It is still important to use protection when going in the sun. Use a sunscreen with a high SPF rating and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun in the middle of the day. While skin tone correctors may have the ability to remove brown spots, they are useless again cancer caused by sun exposure. Caution and moderation are still the best treatment for healthy skin.
