No Sweat - Botox for Staying Dry by Shannon Ginnan, MD, Reveal MedSpa

Dr. GinnanIn the heat of summer, it’s hard for most of us to imagine not sweating. Whether exercising outdoors or just relaxing on the beach, perspiring is more prevalent in the summer months because it’s our body’s cooling mechanism - the most efficient way to maintain a healthy temperature.

For most people, this means the inconvenience of slick palms during a date or interview… and extra dry-cleaning bills. But for millions of Americans, excessive sweating isn’t seasonal or even controllable by over-the-counter methods. Hyperhidrosis is a chronic medical disorder that results in the production of excessive sweat. Because the sweating is caused by a reflex reaction of the nervous system and is beyond voluntary control, it has nothing to do with temperature or anxiety.

A recent study determined that hyperhidrosis affects approximately eight million Americans. On average, these people produce four to five times the amount of sweat as those without the condition. And because hyperhidrosis most often affects the palms, underarms and soles of feet, the sweat is difficult to conceal, making it frustrating and embarrassing to perform the most basic activities. Social and professional engagements and simple things like physical contact with others are made difficult, as well as everyday basics like wearing clothing (since the excessive sweating on both underarms and feet often soaks through the fabric).

In the past, the most effective treatment options included surgery, but recent studies have found that Botox is a safe, simple and effective alternative to treating excessive sweating. Injected into the skin of perspiration-prone sites, Botox stops sweat production by blocking nerve terminals. Within two days, sweating begins to decrease, and within a week, patients experience a significant and often dramatic reduction in sweating (and often the odor that accompanies it). Because you continue to sweat normally in other areas, there is no concern about overheating. For maximum results, injections may need to be repeated every six to nine months.

This procedure makes it possible for those inconvenienced by excessive sweating to simplify their daily routines and go about their lives in a more confident manner.
