Darker Skins and Skin Cancer
It is true that skin cancer mainly seems to target lighter skin colors; however, darker skins can also develop the condition. Something that many people do not realize is that although darker skins do have less of a chance of developing skin cancer, once they do have it, the effects tend to be a lot more serious than they are in lighter skins. Part of that is because it is harder to spot early signs in darker skins than it is with lighter ones.
Skin cancer in darker skins is sometimes so severe it is fatal. There are more deaths from skin cancer in darker skins than there are in lighter ones. This means that sun protection factor lotions need to be worn by everybody, no mater what their skin color. It is thought that darker skins, particularly dark, black skins, have a natural protection factor of up to 13, so it is possible to get away with wearing a lighter sun tan lotion. However it is always better to be safe than sorry, so wearing a sun protection factor of at least 15 is advisable.
Generally people with darker skins tend to notice the cancer more on the soles of their feet and on the palms of their hands. These are the easiest places to spot the cancer. It is wise to get yourself checked out if you notice any unusual skin changes. Most of the time people with darker skins do not notice the cancer until it is in its later stages and that is when treatment is harder.
So, although skin cancer is rarer in darker skins, it is certainly more deadly than it is in fairer skins. It needs treating as soon as possible so it is vital that you check your skin every day in order to notice any changes, especially in the soles of the feet and the palms of your hands. Do not gamble with your health – wear sunscreen to protect yourself and ensure it has a protection factor of at least 15.
