Sweet Skincare Part 1: How Honey Works in Beauty

How Honey Works in BeautySure honey tastes great but have you ever thought about what it can do for your skin? Honey has been a favorite in beauty and skincare since ancient times, and it hasn’t lost its touch since. From skincare to hair care, honey is making its presence known. To switch things up in your skincare and beauty routine, try throwing some honey into your life.

By adding honey-based beauty products into your daily routine, you join in the ranks of some of the world’s most famous women. Cleopatra bathed in honey and milk for soft, smooth and supple skin back in the days of ancient Egypt. Using a special blend of honey and oils, Queen Anne of England maintained healthy and lustrous hair. Not into old school beauty? You may be interested to know that many of Hollywood’s beauty elite today include honey as part of their regular skincare and hair treatments.

So what makes honey so special? For one thing, honey is a humectant. This means it is made to attract and retain moisture. But that’s not all. Honey also acts as an anti-irritant, so those with sensitive skin types may want to consider looking into honey-based skincare products (creams, moisturizers, cleansers and even hair products like shampoo). While there are plenty of products that contain honey as a main ingredient, using pure honey is ideal when it comes to skincare because honey in its truest form contains all the important vitamins, minerals and enzymes. To make sure the product you choose is legit, make sure the label says that it contains natural honey and not honey that has been jazzed up with the aid of other ingredients or chemicals. Lucky for our skin, honey has been shown to contain high levels of antioxidants.

For those do-it-yourself types, honey skincare and hair care products can be put together using homemade recipes if you don’t want to buy them at a store. Need a serious dose of moisture and hydration for your complexion? Create your own honey moisture facial mask by combining two tablespoons of honey with two teaspoons of milk and applying it to your face and neck. After leaving the mixture on for 10 minutes, rinse with warm water. And that’s it! For allover hydration, pamper yourself from head to toe with your own homemade honey smoothing body lotion. Mix one teaspoon of honey with one teaspoon of vegetable oil and ¼ teaspoon of lemon juice. Apply this lotion to your hands, feet, elbows and other rough areas of skin and rinse off after 10 minutes - your skin will feel amazing! This recipe is especially useful for those with dry and sensitive skin. To follow in the footsteps of Cleopatra, add ¼ cup of honey to running bath water. After one soak in this sweet mixture, you’ll emerge with silky smooth skin.
