Treatment Options for Spider Veins: Sclerotherapy and Lasers

Many women are plagued with spider veins: unsightly small, thin veins most often appear on the ankles, calves and thighs. They can also appear on the stomach, back and face. Although spider veins won`t cause major health problems like varicose veins, they might keep you from wearing bathing suits, skirts and other leg-bearing fashions. Luckily, common treatments like sclerotherapy and lasers make it easy and relatively painless to rid your legs of spider veins. Both of these procedures involve breaking down the veins so that they are reabsorbed into the body and are no longer visible. Both procedures are simple, relatively painless, and involve little time or discomfort during recovery.

What are Spider Veins? Also called telangiectasias, spider veins are thin veins that lie just below the skin`s surface. They are visible because they`ve become dilated and stretched. While they are often hereditary, factors like prolonged sitting or standing, pregnancy, and weight gain can lead to the formation of spider veins.

Procedures for Removing Spider Veins Sclerotherapy: With this treatment, each spider vein is injected with a saline or other similar solution, which causes it to collapse and then be reabsorbed. Depending on how many spider veins you have, it might be necessary to have more than one sclerotherapy treatment. After your treatments, you will need to wear compression-style stockings. It takes about two weeks for discoloration to fade, after which you can break out the mini skirts and shorts! Cost is a major benefit of vein sclerotherapy. However, you will probably need touch ups every couple of years. Although sclerotherapy involves a needle, it`s fairly pain-free. Most patients say that the sensation feels like a pinprick. However, if you`re extremely needle phobic, this procedure might not be for you.

Laser treatment: This high-tech vein eradication technique uses laser-emitted light to targets and spider veins. This causes the hemoglobin in the veins to absorb the light, which leads to the vessels being reabsorbed into the blood system. Benefits: Lasers are faster and afford a greater level of precision and require less downtime. On the other hand, lasers are much more expensive than sclerotherapy.

While both procedures are safe, you can reduce the risk of problems by choosing a doctor who has training and experience with your procedure of choice. The most common risks include the formation of blood clots in the veins, inflammation, and allergic reactions. Pigment irregularity can also occur, but usually corrects itself.
