What it Does
This non-invasive procedure can be used to rectify minor nose deformities such as bumps, drooping tips and similar problems. In short, it helps to improve one’s profile by evening out the shape of the nose. It is not for those persons who want to reduce the size of the nose, however. If the size of the nose is the problem, then old-fashioned rhinoplasty is the procedure to use.
The Procedure
A plastic surgeon will use local anesthesia to numb the nose before beginning the 10-minute procedure. A needle is then used to inject a dermal filler into the areas of the nose that will be worked on. Injecting the filler takes just a couple of minutes. In total the entire procedure while called the 10-minute nose job, may take up to 30 minutes. This is so because the numbing gel is left on for up to 20 minutes to ensure that there is no feeling in the nose when the filler is being injected.
The most popular fillers used are Restylane, Radiesse and Artefill. The fillers work to even out bumps and crookedness in the nose by adding collagen to the nose’s cartilage. Other dermal fillers such as Evolence and Juvederm can be used for this short procedure.
Persons who have the procedure normally need to have at least two sessions to achieve the right kind of contouring. The residual fillers are said to be eliminated from the body via the kidneys as waste matter.
One of the benefits of the 10-minute nose job is that there are generally no telltale signs of bruises and swelling common with surgical correction of nose defects. Another added advantage is the cost. Reshaping the nose with fillers costs a fraction of the price of rhinoplasty. In the UK where the procedure is currently becoming popular, rhinoplasty costs between £2,500 - £3,500 (US$4,000 - $5,600), while the 10-minute nose job costs approximately £300 (US$488).
How Long Does it Last
The 10-minute nose job lasts anywhere from six months to a year depending on the fillers used. In some cases, it can be permanent if its creator Dr. Rivkin uses Artefill. With Radiesse, the effects of the procedure can last from 10 months to one year. If the popular anti-wrinkle filler Restylane is used, the nose job will last for a shorter period, with reports of between six to eight months being common.
With rhinoplasty results are not seen for months after the procedure, however, with this procedure the difference in the appearance of the nose can be seen almost immediately.
Not everyone in the medical community is sure about the procedure’s safety because it is still so new. In fact, the president of the British Association for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, Nigel Mercer is leery about the use of fillers. In an article published in the Daily Mail he is quoted as saying, “Cosmetic products such as fillers do not have to undergo the same rigorous clinical trial process that legally needs to be undertaken for medical treatments.”
