How to Find the Right Doctor for Cosmetic or Plastic Surgery

How to Find the Right Doctor for Cosmetic or Plastic SurgerySo you’ve finally gotten the courage to go ahead and go through with having surgery. Whether it’s cosmetic or reconstructive, the most important part of the process is choosing the right professional for the job. Not just any doctor can perform the procedure you signed up for. Learn how to find the right person and where to start you search.

Often the most popular method of finding a good surgeon for cosmetic or plastic surgery is by word of mouth. How many times have you heard your best girlfriend, coworker, or friend of a friend brag about how great Dr. So-And-So was when he/she did their surgery? The method of personal reference is widely used because most people tend to feel more comfortable or safe hearing about and seeing a surgeon’s handiwork for themselves.

But what if you don’t know anyone who has had plastic or cosmetic surgery to refer a doctor to you? The Internet has made the ability to find a plastic surgeon much easier. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and a score of similar websites offer specialized search engines that allow you to plug in your zip code to find the most qualified and licensed plastic surgeons near you.

Never settle for the first plastic surgeon you come across. It’s best to make a list of the surgeons and go through one by one until you find the perfect match. Make sure the surgeon you choose for your surgery is licensed, qualified, has a list of references you can talk to, as well as before and after photos of his/her work. Also thoroughly check the facility where the surgeon practices for cleanliness and make sure the surgeon is operating in a facility that has been properly accredited by the ASPS. If the surgeon is a member of the ASPS, that is a plus because this shows the surgeon has been properly certified to operate in accredited medical facilities, adheres to a strict code of ethics, and upholds the highest standards when it comes to patient safety.

One of the most important things to remember is to choose a surgeon who specializes in the type of surgery you are seeking. In order words, what good is it to hire a surgeon who mostly does tummy tucks when you want a facelift? Some surgeons specialize in more than one form of surgery but make sure that the person you choose has plenty of hands-on experience with the specific procedure you want to get.

Pre-consultations are key in getting to know how the plastic surgeon of your choice operates. During this time, be sure to ask any and all questions, including the surgeon’s background and credibility. The surgeon will not be offended if you ask him/her such questions. Do not agree to go through with the procedure until all of your answers have been answered thoroughly and you have no doubt in your mind that this is the route you want to take. Don’t forget to ask about post-care and how to prepare for your surgery.

Money tends to play a large issue when it comes to getting plastic or cosmetic surgery, but going for the cheapest surgeon isn’t always a good deal. Plastic and cosmetic surgery involves risks so it is best to save up and spend your money on a well qualified professional who can get the job done right and get you results you are happy with.
