Is Laser Resurfacing For You?
Laser resurfacing is one of the newest treatments in the fight against premature aging. Although this brings a myriad of clients flocking to their surgeons to try the latest fad, it also means that little is known about the long-term affects of laser resurfacing.
The procedure is an option for those who are unhappy with their skin but are too hesitant to dive into a full face-lift procedure. It is important to consider expectations of your procedure, however, as the affects can often be less dramatic than occurs in a face-lift. In the majority of cases, laser resurfacing can remove an average of ten years of aging by improving mild wrinkles and pigmentation by approxiamately fifty-percent. Most surgeons will recommend the procedure for patients over the age of fifty, when aging is most advanced and patients will see the most results.
How It Works and What To Expect
Laser resurfacing works by vaporizing water in the skin cell with short, fast pulses of heat, stimulating collagen production and revealing a new layer of skin. Results can vary depending on the type of laser used - there`s the Carbon Dioxide laser used to treat deep wrinkling, and the Erbium lasers (a.k.a YAG lasers) which target more precise areas and cause less damage to surrounding tissue. It is important to consider which laser is used before choosing who will perform your procedure. As with any procedure, it is best to consult the American Society for Plastic Surgeons for a referral to a reputable doctor that should always thoroughly discuss the procedure, it`s side effects, your expectations, and address any questions you may have. The average procedure takes one to two hours, a mild anesthesia is given, and little discomfort is felt.
Healing
Depending on the depth of your wrinkles and the intensity of your procedure, healing time is among the longest. Most surgeons will recommend bandaging the skin for the first three days and keeping a layer of ointment on the face for at least a week . At this point, most patients will experience a layer of crusting which should be gently cleansed and not picked. Pain relievers may be taken if the patient experiences any discomfort, but this should subside after a couple of weeks. Redness and irritation can occur for up to two to four months afterwards, but if skin is properly cared for, results can last for up to ten years. As with any facial resurfacing procedure, skin will increase in sensitivity to the sun, and proper sunscreen must be worn on a daily basis.
