Smart lipo can be performed separately or as an additional procedure along with traditional liposuction. With smart lipo, a small, fiber optic cannula (approximately 1-2 mm wide) is used to create a small puncture in the skin. The cannula is moved back and forth to activate the laser’s energy to the fat cells. The laser melts fat and coagulates the loose ends of small blood vessels, thus causing permanent fat cell loss. Appointments last approximately 45 minutes to one hour, with most patients requiring only one appointment. Small areas of the body are appropriate for smart lipo, such as the face, neck, knees, arms, back area of a bra strap, mons pubis, breasts or other small areas with loose or flabby skin. Due to these factors, smart lipo has been dubbed “lunch-time lipo.”
Since smart lipo is minimally invasive, it requires only local anesthesia, as opposed to general. There is minimal downtime and doctors require at least 1-2 days of rest before returning to regular activities. There is less swelling and bruising and compression garments may not be necessary due to minimal bleeding and fluid build-up. Results may be seen almost immediately and full results may take approximately 3-4 months. Areas of the body will be more contoured and firmer, and since no procedure can guarantee the loss of cellulite, smart lipo can help minimize the appearance of cellulite.
Ideal candidates for smart lipo are the same for those who consider traditional liposuction. Candidates need to be in good health, be at an ideal body weight and have areas that have not responded to weight loss and exercise. As with any cosmetic procedure, candidates need to also have realistic expectations for results.
