What is a Neck Lift?

What is a Neck Lift?A neck lift seems like an odd procedure to undergo but for the patients who have had it done, this process eliminates many problems. As with any surgical procedure, there are health and safety factors to consider, which is why it’s important to learn exactly what to expect and if you’d be an ideal candidate. The more you know, the better the outcome will be.

Neck lifts are ideal for removing excess amounts of skin around the neck and jaw line. This process works well for those who have loose, sagging skin in this area as a result of extreme weight loss, bad family genes or for those who simply want to achieve a tighter and younger appearance.

The neck lift is actually a set of procedures that aim to enhance the appearance of one’s neck. These procedures include the following: cervicoplasty, platysmaplasty, and neck liposuction if needed. Cervicoplasty is used to remove the excess skin from the neck. Platysmaplasty works to remove and/or alter the neck muscles. Neck liposuction eliminates any lingering pockets of fat. Sometimes Botox is even used to treat problem areas afterwards. The entire process typically takes between three to four hours to perform. This can vary if you decide to add extra procedures or need a lot of work done. Candidates hoping to get a neck lift done are required to be physically and mentally healthy before undergoing this surgery.

Common ailments that neck lifts can treat include removing loose or weakened neck muscles, commonly known as “turkey neck.” To treat this condition, the surgeon will make an incision under your chin and behind the ears in order to gain access to the neck muscles. Next, the surgeon will manipulate the muscles to get you the desired results. Sutures are often used to hold the tissue and new form in place.

For those with an abnormal amount of skin around the neck, the surgeon will perform cervicoplasty, which allows him/her to trim the excess skin and lift it into a tighter and firmer appearance. Tissue glue and/or stitches will hold your new shape in place. You may be required to wear a compression bandage for one week to set the new skin. Neck liposuction for fat removal involves making an incision below the chin, allowing excess fat to be removed.

Common side effects of getting a neck lift performed are swelling and bruising, which can last for a few days. Numbness, pulling and burning sensations are normal occurrences in the first few weeks following surgery. One risk factor to pay attention to is the risk of infection. If your temperature is high and you develop a fever, seek medical attention immediately. Discharge coming from the area where the incision was made is also a sign that you need to see your doctor. Because recovery can take between 10-14 days, it is important to take it easy while recovering and avoid any physical activities. For people who are very physically active in sports and other activities you may be advised to wait at least three weeks before resuming your regular routine.

When heading to your surgery, be sure to wear a loose and comfortable top that buttons up so you don’t have to pull your shirt over your head afterwards. Keep the following supplies close to you at home while you recover: gauze, towels, thermometer, ice packs, loose clothing, and antibacterial ointment. Having someone around to help you is also a good idea.
