You may not think about it much, but the lifestyle you lead can have a significant affect on how you sleep and why you snore. Recognizing which factors contribute to your snoring can help you easily remedy the problem. Factors that may be the cause of your snoring habit includes: smoking, weight and alcohol.
It’s an obvious fact that smoking is a terrible habit that does more harm than good for your body. You may be surprised to know that if you’re a smoker, your bad habit may be responsible for why you snore. Smokers tend to have their airways obstructed due to the swelling that occurs each time you smoke a cigarette. This swelling takes place in the tissues of the throat, the mucous membranes inside the nose and can even cause blockage in the small vessels inside the lungs. Because of these obstructions, it makes it much more difficult for air to pass through when you sleep at night, which can result in snoring. If you find that this is the cause of your snoring habit, stop smoking immediately. This will cause the swelling to go down and the obstructions to disappear.
Weight and snoring don’t typically go hand-in-hand but according to recent studies, your weight may have something to do with your snoring. These studies found that patients who slimmed down to their ideal weight range found that they either snored less or stopped snoring altogether. If you have a poor diet filled with rich foods, don’t get regular exercise or suffer from a medical condition, chances are you are a snorer. These poor lifestyle practices can cause obstructions in your airways, causing your body to work even harder to provide you with proper airflow while sleeping. Get into the gym, include water, fruits and veggies into your daily diet and you’ll find that you’ll be able to get a better night’s rest, minus the snoring.
Drinking too much alcohol could also be a contributing factor to your snoring problem. The presence of alcohol relaxes the airway while you sleep, which may sound good but the issue is that the alcohol actually causes too much relaxation. As a result, this action contributes to the partial collapse of the airways, which is responsible for getting air to and from your lungs while you sleep.
